According to a report by Accenture, the global pandemic has created a huge surge in demand for everything wellness as consumers look to boost immune systems and improve overall physical and mental health. The pandemic has pointed consumers in a new direction – with a strong focus on healthier food, better lifestyle practices and improved nutrition.
How can supplement brands innovate their products to improve outcomes of COVID?
There are a few key ingredients that have been highly monitored and studied since the onset of COVID. One of these being Vitamin D. Although supplement labels cannot claim to prevent, cure or treat any disease, one study shows that 82.2% of hospitalized COVID patients had a vitamin D deficiency. Another study shows those with deficiency levels, compared to those with stable levels, were twice as likely to test positive for SARS-CoV-2. Based on these findings, 220 scientists and doctors issued an open letter to all governments, public health officials, doctors and healthcare workers calling for immediate widespread increased vitamin D intakes.
Vitamin D is not the only ingredient being widely discussed. Among others are Magnesium, Vitamin K2, and Quercetin.
Magnesium and vitamin K2 both optimize the effects of Vitamin D. According to James DiNicolantonio, Pharm.D. “Magnesium is needed to activate vitamin D.” Vitamin K2 also boosts Vitamin D.
According to a March 2021 study, quercetin was ranked 5 out of 18 compounds which candidates assessed to interfere with SARS-CoV-2 replication. Researchers have shared evidence which suggests using quercetin with Vitamin C to produce antiviral and immunomodulatory effects.
Again, it’s important to remember that nutraceutical supplements cannot claim to prevent, cure or treat any disease. However, using research to make informed decisions around the supplements you plan to manufacture is key.
